New Road

Architect: Gehl Architects

Location: Brighton

Completed: 2007

Brighton city council knew that this ideally located street was not maximizing it's potential, serving local people or businesses well, so initially they had the idea to close the road to vehicles altogether.  Gehl Architects worked with others to then reimagine the street entirely by responding to the pedestrianization of New Road project through creating a new type of street in the city and in the UK: Brighton was England’s first shared space street where cars are welcome – but on pedestrian’s terms.

This was achieved through various subtle changes to the street to ensure that vehicles were more considerate of the now apparent boundary they were entering. These including bespoke paving, street furniture and the abolition of street signage like curbs and traffic crossings.
