Klyde Warren Park
Architect: The Office of James Burnett
Location: Dallas, Texas
Completed: 2012

Klyde Warren Park was designed by landscape architect Jim Burnett, of The Office of James Burnett. His design is meant to create a unique sense of discovery as you move to the different areas throughout the park. The sustainable landscaping includes 37 plant species and over 320 trees, transforming a former freeway to a beautiful urban oasis. The park is a feat of engineering and design as it preserves the freeway below and creates a street level park for all to access and enjoy.
The deck is made of more than 300 concrete beams and concrete slabs span the spaces connecting to the bottoms of the beams to form trenches which act like planter boxes, allowing the trees to grow to the desired size. A combination of Geofoam and specially-designed soil helps keep the deck from being too heavy and the deck gives opportunity to a multitude of uses including nature walks, outdoor cinemas, commerce stalls, kids' play parks and all the activities associated with a park.
