Madrid Rio Project
Architect: West8 & MRIO
Location: Madrid
Completed: 2011

Madrid is located approximately 4 hours away from the nearest beach in the region, and the Madrid Rio Project seeks to bring the beach to an urban environment. In January 2008, the Madrid Río project was unveiled. Due to changes and enhancements to the infrastructure in the area large portions of the bank and the immediate context of it along the Manzanares River have been converted into a long park, including an urban beach, rowing lanes on the river, walks, bicycle paths, kiosks, cafés and restaurants, terraces, cultural and sports facilities, areas for pensioners and children's play areas.

By aiming to include various different uses and ways of utilising the new free space it is hoped that the Madrid Rio Project converts the inner city area in to a vibrant and enjoyable space, all within the city limits. Therefore this should increase the appetite for venturing within the city, reduce emissions to and from the nearest beach but most importantly provide a change to the landscape fo the city for the better.
