Cheonggyecheon

Architect: SeoAhn Total Landscape

Location: Seoul

Completed: 2005

As part of the venture to reimagine Seoul the otherwise abandoned Cheonggyecheon stream was included in the paradigm shift of the city. Essentially, the autocentric concrete, urban landscape has been transformed to one that values quality of life and the developing ecosystems that surround green spaces within our cities. Insects, plants and fish have returned to the stream were once only rubbish flowed and where their was once skepticism about the project are now only opinions of how well it has reconstituted the area.

By demolishing the previous freeway and uncovering the stream the project uncovered more than just a river, it uncovered the opportunity for both ecological and recreational development. The project has proven catalytic, spurring economic growth and development in an area of Seoul that had languished over the last several decades.
