Urban Fabric Analysis

The map below highlights the road layout (grey) in relation to the existing railway (red) and watercourses (blue) within a 1km diameter area including the site. The road layout of the site and its context is disjointed and haphazardly orientated. It is clear that the dominance of the railway lines and watercourses act more as a barriers than connections. The main roads generally reflect the routes of the watercourses. There are few blocks formed by the roads themselves, rather a series of land parcels defined by a multitude of routes.

Comparing the urban fabric to that of other equally sized portions of the city, the lack of co-ordination and logic becomes clear. Whilst the uses of 3, 4, and 5 is the same, they demonstrate how a variety of street patterns can achieve similar success in forging an inviting sense of place and connection. By contrast, St Phillips appears inward-looking and deterring.
