The Danish firm has won a competition to design a centre which channels wind to create a comfortable microclimate in a central plaza.The concept behind the Etobicoke Civic Centre is a group of buildings of various sizes arranged to shelter a public square from cold prevailing winds.
The project proposes to increase pedestrian activity in the area after research conducted by the architect that temperatures in Toronto were perceives as too cold for most of the months of the year. The development will host festivals, outdoor cinema screenings, concerts, farmer’s market along with municipal offices, community recreation centre and a branch of the Toronto Public Library.
