The High Line

Architect: Diller and Scofidio

Location: New York

Completed: 2014 (final phase)

The High Line is an elevated public park in New York that was converted from an existing railway. The railway was built in 1930s and was abandoned in 1980, running across the west side of the city.

The team was aiming to create a ‘part agriculture, part architecture’ and ‘pathless’ landscape that was inspired by the wild seeded landscape during the 25 years after the trains stopped running. Over one hundred species of plants are planted on High Line, with a focus on native species, many of the species that originally grew on the High Line’s rail bed are incorporated into the park’s landscape.
